My new hobby will be....knitting! I have tried so many times to get the hang of knitting, but this time I'm determined! I practiced a bit last fall with marginal success. I want to really practice now and get better! I want to make a scarf! I want to make a hat! The possibilities are endless. So...tomorrow I will start and I will continue {this is what I'm telling myself} even if I have trouble. Tension was really my problem last fall but I can do it! If there is anyone out there with knitting hints or suggestions, please send them my way!
I'll share my tips, not that I'm an expert by any means. Try both styles of knitting (I knit continental style). If I don't know how to do something I look it up on you tube. They have tons of videos that are really helpful. Start with a really chunky yarn and big needles. Your choices look great. I love circular needles, even for scarfs. The metal ones are great because the yarn slides really well on it. I have a hard time knitting too tightly and I thing the metal needles help. I use the Skacel brand. Some people don't like them because they are more slippery, but I find it helps me. The wood or bamboo needles tend to hold onto the yarn more. Another reason I love circular needles is that the needle part is shorter and easier to control. I don't like having long needles to deal with. And I like that when you're not working you can push your knitting onto the cord part and not worry about it falling off the needles. My mom says I knit with my shoulders hunched up and that is part of the reason my stitches are tight, so I am working on loosening up. She says I knit on the tips of the needles too much and I should use the thicker part of the needle. I'm lucky to have my mom (whose a great knitter and crocheter) to ask questions. The only other thing I can say is keep practicing. I was amazed that after a couple year hiatis my hands new what to do when I started making Jackson's hat. I guess its like riding a bike, once you get it you wont forget. Let me know if you have any questions, I'll try me best to help you. Hope this helps!
